This session will provide an essential update on current bail law, evolving jurisprudence, and practical strategies for effective advocacy in the Nunavut context. It will be particularly valuable for anyone practicing or researching criminal law in the territory, and especially for those serving as Duty Counsel who must address bail issues quickly and effectively in high-pressure settings. Participants will benefit from concrete guidance, case updates, and opportunities for discussion.

When? March 31, 2026 from  12-1 pm ET  Online and in-person at the Law Society office.

Recognised CLE hours:  1 hour  of Substantive legal or procedural issues/  Live or On-Demand Programs / Courses.

Sharon Sabourin has practiced criminal law for approaching two decades, with a significant portion of her career dedicated to legal aid and duty counsel services in Nunavut and Northern Ontario. She is widely recognized for her expertise in bail hearings, Gladue-informed release planning, and navigating the complex realities of remand and circuit court practice in remote and fly-in communities. Sharon has appeared regularly before the Nunavut Court of Justice and has delivered numerous professional development sessions for northern practitioners, focusing on practical advocacy skills and culturally informed approaches to criminal defence.
