What? Inuit Focused Legal Services and the Future of Indigenous Justice

  1.     Panelists
    1. Victoria Perrie
    2. Mandy Sammurtok
  2. In this session, Victoria Perrie and Mandy Sammurtok will discuss the landmark report Northern Lights, Southern Justice: Charting a Course for Inuit-Focused Legal Services and its implications for the delivery of justice in Nunavut and its southern hubs. Drawing on the report’s findings, they will examine systemic barriers faced by Inuit in accessing fair and culturally appropriate legal services, and highlight practical recommendations for reform.
  3. The conversation will connect these findings to the broader Indigenous Justice Strategy, situating Inuit-focused justice within national conversations about reconciliation and access to justice. Together, Victoria and Mandy will consider:
    1. What does Inuit-focused legal service delivery look like in practice?
    2. How can governments and institutions respond meaningfully to the recommendations of Northern Lights, Southern Justice and?
    3. Where does the Indigenous Justice Strategy align with Inuit-specific needs, and where are unique approaches required?
    4. What does the future of Indigenous justice in Canada look like from an Inuit perspective?
  4. This CLE will offer both a policy-level lens and practical takeaways for lawyers, policymakers, and service providers seeking to understand and support Inuit-led justice initiatives.
