Who? Katherine Shadbolt LLB & Michelle Kinney LLB
Katherine Shadbolt has practiced exclusively in the area of family law for 39 years. From 1988
to 2023, she practiced in a mid-sized firm in Ottawa (as a partner from 1993). During that time,
she provided a full range of services in family law, including negotiations, mediations, and
appearances in court proceedings up to the appellate level. She has litigated a wide scope of
issues related to parenting, child support, spousal support, property division, trusts, pensions, and
equalization payments.
Since 2023, Katherine has been a sole family law practitioner, offering mediation, mentoring,
teaching, legal opinions, and topical articles on family law matters. She serves on the Executives
of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section and Family Law Section of the Ontario Bar
Association; as well as on the Executive of the Family Section of the Canadian Bar Association.
She is also a coach and advisor with the Law Society of Ontario’s Coach and Advisor Network.
Katherine was recognized in the 2026 Edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada for Family Law, a
distinction she has received for fourteen consecutive years
Michelle Kinney focusses her law practice, Michelle Kinney Law, on fertility law, family law and dispute resolution. As one of the architects of the BC Family Law Act, Michelle has in-depth knowledge of BC’s family and parentage laws. Michelle was called to the Bar in British Columbia in 2007 and in Nunavut in 2020. Michelle is certified as a family law mediator and arbitrator by the Law Society of BC. Michelle also contracts with public or private bodies to carry out law and policy reform initiatives respecting family law, family violence and fertility law. Michelle taught the Family Law course at the University of Victoria (2024) and UBC (2016). She regularly contributes to education and law reform initiatives respecting family law, family violence and fertility law.
