Interview with Sandhya Chari President of the Law Society of Nunavut

The Law Society of Nunavut is pleased to announce Sandhya Chari as its new President. Sandhya replaces John MacLean, whose tenure as President concluded June 24th, at the end of the 2021 Annual General Meeting. Since December 2016, Sandhya has served as in-house counsel with the Constitutional Law Division of the Government of Nunavut. Throughout her career Sandhya has been an active volunteer both within her profession and community and was recently recognized by the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association (CCCA) with the 2021 Up and Comer Award.

Interview with Sara Siebert Council member at the Federation of Law Societies of Canada

Sara Siebert holds the distinction of being able to say that she worked at Canada’s most northern legal aid clinic. In 2014, Sara accepted a position as criminal defence counsel with the Kitikmeot Law Centre - Canada’s most northern legal aid clinic. In 2016 Sara moved to Iqaluit where she transitioned from legal aid to becoming a sole practitioner. Sara is also the member nominated by the Law Society of Nunavut to the Council of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada. She is responsible for bringing forward Nunavut’s position to the national discussions and to ensure the unique features of Nunavut are taken into account when setting national standards.

Remembering the Late Justice Beverley Browne Interview with Justice Tulloch

On September 10, 2021, a celebration of life for the late Honourable Madam Justice Beverley Browne was held at the Nunavut Court of Justice where the courthouse law library was dedicated to her. Immortalized in English, Inuktitut and French, “Nunavut’s law library is dedicated to the memory of Judge Beverley Browne, Nunavut’s first resident and first Senior Justice of the Nunavut Court of Justice.” Members of the community, justice stakeholders, and the Law Society of Nunavut members gathered to celebrate the life and contributions made to Nunavut by Justice Beverley Browne.
